Countertop basins: proportions, placement and the right mixer

A countertop basin is a sculpture on the vanity. How to choose its size, place it well and pair it with the right mixer.

A countertop basin sits on the vanity like an object rather than disappearing into it. That is its appeal, and the reason why its size, height and mixer need to be chosen together.

Start with the vanity

Measure the usable depth and width of the vanity top. Leave space around the basin for a soap dish and for cleaning. In the ASPEN range, sizes go from compact bowls such as the ASP-BS-2002 (360 × 360 mm) to long forms such as the ASP-BS-2004 (720 × 330 mm) and the ASP-BS-2020 (605 × 390 mm).

Mind the height

Countertop basins add their own height to the vanity. Our basins range from 130 mm (ASP-BS-2007, ASP-BS-2004) to 380 mm (ASP-BS-1009). A taller basin often calls for a lower cabinet, so that the rim stays at a comfortable height for everyday use.

Shape and character

  • Round bowls such as the ASP-BS-2007 and ASP-BS-2015 soften a rectilinear room.
  • Square and rectangular forms such as the ASP-BS-2010 and ASP-BS-2006 echo tiles and cabinetry.
  • Sculptural pieces such as the fluted ASP-BS-1009, which can be wall mounted or placed on a countertop, become the focal point of the room.

Choosing the mixer

Because the rim is high, the mixer has to reach over it. A wall-mounted concealed basin mixer keeps the vanity top clear and lets you set the spout at exactly the right height. In the collection, the ASP-BASIN MIXER-542, 842 and K305 are all wall-mounted. Check that the spout reaches towards the centre of the bowl, so water does not splash on the rim.

Two basins

For a double vanity, choose two identical basins or two related shapes in the same glaze, and keep the mixers aligned on the same axis as the bowls.

All ASPEN wash basins are ceramic in white (WH). The catalogue lists dimensions and gross weight for every model.
