Concealed mixers: what to decide before the wall is closed

Once the tiles are on, the body of a concealed mixer stays where it is. A short checklist for the planning stage.

A concealed mixer leaves only a slim panel and a lever on the wall. Everything else sits behind the tiles, which is why the important decisions happen early, long before the bathroom is finished.

1. How many functions?

A single-function mixer controls one outlet, for example a bidet spray next to a toilet. A two-function mixer switches between two outlets, typically a head shower and a hand shower. In the ASPEN range, toilet mixers such as the ASP-TOILET MIXER-540 are single-function, and shower mixers such as the ASP-SHOWER MIXER-541 are two-function.

2. Cartridge and body

All ASPEN concealed mixers use a 35 mm cartridge; the 541 and 841 shower mixers specify a Wanhai cartridge. Bodies and panels are made of brass, and the 840 series adds a stainless-steel cover.

3. Panel size and shape

The panel is what you see every day, so its proportions matter. The collection includes square panels of 160 × 120 mm and 180 × 120 mm, wide panels of 200 × 100 mm for the K and G basin mixers, and round panels in the 840 series. Panels are 2.5 mm thick.

4. Basin mixers: reach and height

A wall-mounted basin mixer has to work with the basin below it. Check that the spout reaches towards the centre of the bowl and sits at a comfortable height above the rim. This is especially important with tall countertop basins.

5. One finish, everywhere

Decide on the finish before ordering, so that mixers, shower outlets and flush plates match. Many concealed mixers are available in several finishes; the 540 series, for example, comes in CP, MB and GD.

Before tiling

  • Install the body at the depth given in the installation instructions, so the panel sits flush with the finished wall.
  • Have the installation pressure-tested while the wall is still open.
  • Keep a note of the product code and finish for future service.
